Redwood Valley drops pair heading into Section 3AA playoffs
Following an interesting regular season the Redwood Valley boys basketball team will now turn its attention to the start of the Section 3AA Tournament.
The Cardinals (12-13) have earned the number three seed in the North half of the bracket and will host Paynesville Area Saturday night at 7 p.m. in quarterfinal action.
Winners advance to play again Thursday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the NL/Spicer vs. Montevideo match-up.
The Cards lost to NL/Spicer in a close battle 74-66 on Jan. 27. Minnewaska Area - who the Cardinals defeated 71-68 in late December - is the top seed in a wide open race.
Redwood Valley wrapped up the regular season Monday night with a 66-58 loss to South top seed Fairmont. Cole Woodford led the way with 21 points and two rebounds and Mitch Irlbeck had 13 points and eight rebounds. Kyle Huhnerkoch went 3-of-3 from long range on the way to 11 points and Deo Charles added five points and two rebounds. The Cards struggled to 20-of-55 shooting (36 percent) and were 10-of-16 from the charity stripe.
The Cards also recently fell on the road to Pipestone Area 74-70 in a close contest. Woodford knocked down six three’s on the way to a game-high 30 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Irlbeck had a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds and Logan Josephson had 16 points and six rebounds. Charles had three points and three rebounds and Huhnerkoch added two points
