Persson scores pair in 3-0 win
A pair of goals from leading scorer Axel Persson helped Redwood Valley skate past Willmar 3-0 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference hockey match-up held in Redwood Falls.
Redwood Valley (9-16) dominated the action, outshooting Willmar 38-17, but still led just 1-0 after two periods of play on a power play goal from Persson.
Nine minutes into the third, the Cardinals got an insurance goal from Matthew Muetzel, and Persson would score on a power play goal with just over a minute-and-a-half remaining to put the game on ice. Folke Bjorkman had a pair of assists, and TJ Crews added one in the victory.
Jack Hawton picked up the shutout victory in net, stopping all 17 shots on goal.
Persson’s two goals gave him a team-leading 21 on the season to go along with 10 assists (31 points). Luke Ryan is second in scoring with 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) and Bjorkman (three goals, 12 assists), Crews (eight goals, seven assists) and Will O’Halloran (six goals, nine assists) all have 15 points. Hawton is 8-7 overall with 357 saves and a .837 save percentage.
The Cards then made it three straight wins with a 5-4 victory over Prairie Center Monday night at home.
Jed Hansen got the Cards on the board first early in the opening frame on an assist from Ryan, and the two teams would head into the first period break tied at one.
In the second period, the Cards took control with three straight goals, as Crews found the net once and Persson scored twice to give the home team a 4-1 lead.
Prairie Center would answer back, however, with two goals to close out the second and would trail by just one heading into the third.
A big goal from D’on Sullivan put the Cards back up by two at 5-3, and they would hold on from there for a 5-4 win. Persson finished with two goals and an assist, and Hawton had 19 saves to pick up the win in net.
Muetzel, O’Halloran, Bjorkman (2), Cam Sommers and Cordell Plass all had assists. The Cardinals will now start to gear up for the Section 3A tournament.
