Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of what is known as the Season of Lent, includes the wearing of ashes on the forehead. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made humankind.

For those of the Christian faith, Ash Wednesday is considered a time of prayer and of fasting. Ash Wednesday helps prepare Christians for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is celebrated Easter Sunday.

According to tradition, the ashes that are used during the Ash Wednesday services are from the burning of palm branches used during the celebration of Palm Sunday the previous year.
