Close match victories helped Wabasso/RRC top Redwood-River Valley 35-30
Winning three close matches the Wabasso/RRC wrestling team held off Redwood-River Valley 35-30 Thursday night in a competitive dual meet held at the RVHS gymnasium.
In a match that went right down to the wire, it was three key wins by the Bobcats the swayed the outcome.
At 152, the Bobcats state-ranked Jared Schroepfer - who recently went over 100 career wins - got into a good battle with the Badgers Devin Johnson. It was 6-6 with 30 seconds to go in the third period when Johnson let Schroepfer go (a one-point escape) with the intent of taking him down for the win. Schroepfer would thwart that attempt however and would earn a key 7-6 decision.
At 195, Redwood-River Valley sophomore Adam Bommersbach was leading the Bobcats’ Derek Werner 4-1 but Werner would eventually tie up the score at four with under 40 seconds left in the match. An escape could’ve given Bommersbach the win but instead he was turned on his back for a two-point nearfall, giving the match to Werner 6-4.
At 220, Badger sophomore Kaleb Haase wrestled the Bobcats’ Issac Schmiesing tough but would fall 2-1.
Anyone of those three matches could’ve swung the final outcome for the Badgers.
The Badgers picked up falls from Maverick Goblirsch (126), Tayte Harazin (145) and Chad Maddock (Hwt.) and a forfeit win for Omar Arredondo (132). Owen Bertram held on to defeat Carter Benz 12-8 at 120 and Eric Bommersbach got caught in a headlock and was nearly pinned but recovered from an early 5-0 deficit to top Calvin Anderson 7-5 at 160.
For the Bobcats, Vander Mathiowetz (113) won by fall over Damico Arredondo, Gabe Martin (138) earned a 16-0 technical fall over Matthew Zeug, Lance Wagner picked up a first period fall over Andy Fischer at 170 and Nick Altermatt won by forfeit at 182.
Mason Irlbeck held off Carter Brandt 9-4 in the 106 pound match.
The win improved the Bobcats overall dual meet record to 17-6 while the Badgers fell to 17-11. The Badgers will face Montevideo UNITED in Section 3AA opening round action on Thursday in Marshall (7:15 p.m.).
The Bobcats meanwhile are the fourth seed in the Section 3A bracket and will face JCC at 7 p.m. Thursday in Lamberton.
Minneota is the top seed in a tough Section, followed by a good TMB/WWG team and Canby.
