Irlbeck notches game-winner as Redwood Valley tops Springfield 79-77

Mitch Irbeck’s floater with just seconds remaining in regulation helped Redwood Valley top host Springfield 79-77 in a non-conference boys basketball showdown Thursday night in Springfield.

Irlbeck has made a living lately out of late game heroics, as he notched his third game-winning shot in less than a month to give the Cardinals (7-5) their second straight quality win.

Meanwhile, it was the first loss of the season for the Tigers (10-1) who entered the game ranked second in Class A.

For the Cardinals, it was arguably their most effective outing of the season, as they had control for most of the game before holding off a late Tiger rally. Junior Cole Woodford continued his strong play, scoring 18 of his 24 points in the first half (including four three pointers) as the Cardinals led 39-33 at the break.

The Tigers held a brief 41-39 lead in the second half, but the Cards would use a 14-0 run to take control and would lead by as many as 16. The Tigers would rally to tie the score at 77, but Irlbeck would get the ball in the waning moments and waited to take the last shot, burying it in the face of Tiger standout Isaac Fink.

Irlbeck would finish with 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting. Deo Charles went 3-of-4 from distance to finish with 11 points and five rebounds, Logan Josephson had five points and 10 boards and Payton Nelson had six points.

Woodford had five assists and five rebounds to go along with his 24 points. The Cards shot nearly 53 percent from the floor (31-of-59) and were 12-of-29 from long range.

Fink led the Tigers with 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and Tanner Vogel had 19 points, eight boards and six assists.
