The Redwood Valley Middle School Knowledge Bowl team is wrapping up its season Jan. 4 when it competes in the Region contest at SMSU in Marshall.
According to Jane Sanchez, who is in her first year coaching the middle-school team, the students from RVMS have had a pretty good year.
“In each of the meets the students have placed in the top third,” said Sanchez.
Sanchez opted to serve as the coach this year, because the school needed a new one for the team.
“I wanted to see the opportunity continue for these kids and thought it would be fun to work with these students outside of a classroom setting,” she said.
Prior to the Christmas break the team competed in the Sub-Region meet, and out of 62 teams it placed 23rd. That allowed the team to advance to the regional meet.
This year's team, which is made up of students in Grades 7-9, includes: Aubrey Munshower, Jack Frank, Mason Bawden, Wyatt Smith, Cameron Seaman, Jenith Beske, Rachel Anderson and Tatiana Old Rock.
Mason Bawden, who is a seventh grader and is in his first year of competition, said he joined the team because he thought it would be something fun for him.
What he discovered is that he knew some of the answers, especially in the areas of math and science.
“I really like the trivia part of it,” he said.
