Cardinals struggle from the floor, fall to Lakeview in title game

A rough second half was costly for the Redwood Valley boys basketball team as they fell 66-55 to Lakeview in the championship game of the Hometown Bank Holiday Tournament Thursday night in Redwood Falls.

The Cardinals (5-3) led 36-35 at the break but were outscored 31-19 in the second half en route to a tough loss to the Lakers.

The Cards shot just 3-of-21 from long range and were 6-of-12 from the charity stripe.

Mitch Irlbeck led the way with 25 points and four rebounds. Cole Woodford had an uncharacteristic shooting night, going 3-of-19 from the floor to finish with nine points, 12 rebounds and two steals. Kyle Huhnerkoch added five points and two rebounds, Bronson Smith had six points, Logan Josephson had five points and eight boards and Deo Charles had four points.

Wednesday night in the Lindahl vs. Lindahl father-son showdown, the Cardinals rallied from a poor first half showing to roll past Benson 67-50.

The Cards actually trailed 29-26 at the half to the winless Braves but outscored their outmatched opponents by 20 in the second half.

The Cards had nice balance with nine players reaching the scoring column led by Charles who finished with 13 points, two assists and two rebounds. Huhnerkoch added 12 points, three rebounds and two steals and Smith went 2-of-2 from long range to finish with 11 points and two rebounds off the bench.

Woodford finished with seven points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals and Irlbeck had six points, five rebounds and three steals. Colin Wells added seven points, three rebounds and two assists, Payton Nelson hit a pair of three’s to finish with six points, Logan Josephson added three points and six rebounds and Michael Mace had two points.

The Cardinals had a rough night from the floor, shooting 22-of-70 (31 percent) and were 17-of-26 from the charity stripe.
