Altermatt earns title at 170 pounds as Bobcats finish in sixth place
Nick Altermatt finished as a champion and Mason Irlbeck was second to lead the Wabasso/RRC Bobcat wrestlers to a sixth place finish at the prestigious Redwood River Riot Wrestling Tournament held Friday and Saturday in Redwood Falls.
Fairmont/MCW captured the event in impressive fashion with 216.5 team points followed by Litchfield (158.5), Marshall (117), Sibley East (113), St. Peter (112) and Wabasso/RRC (111.5) in the 33-team event.
Redwood-River Valley was 20th overall.
Altermatt - ranked third in Class A at 170 - had a nice tournament in winning the 170 pound weight class. He opened the tourney with a technical fall, then took his next two matches by first period fall (1:07 and :35). In the semifinals he got a good battle from Trevor Eisfeld (11-1) of TMB/WWG, winning 4-0 to advance to the championship match. In the title match he battled Collin Steuber (11-1) of Fairmont/MCW and would come away with an 8-5 win to improve to 10-0 on the season.
Irlbeck (12-2) had a tough opening round match, winning 3-2 over Coy Gunderson of KMS but would then win by first period fall and 5-0 to move into the semifinals. In the semifinals, he earned a tough 4-3 decision and would then fall to Lucas Jagodzinske (11-1) of Fairmont/MCW in the championship.
State-ranked Jared Schroepfer (15-2) earned a third place finish at 160 pounds. He would open the tourney with a 9-1 major decision, won 7-1 and then held on for a 5-4 win to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, he fell 4-3 to Zach Buseman of BEA but would rebound for a 4-2 win in the third place match.
Isaac Schmiesing also picked up a third place finish at 220 pounds. He received a first round bye and would lose by fall but recovered to reach the third place match, winning 7-4 over Tanner Berghuis of ACGC. Kyle Jacobson earned a seventh place finish at Heavyweight.
Redwood-River Valley was led by junior Tayte Harazin who earned a fourth place finish at 145 pounds. Harazin (12-4) opened with a third period fall before losing to second-seeded Sean Howk of New Ulm 5-0. He then earned a 5-1 decision, won 10-3 over a Minneapolis South wrestler, picked up a nice 5-2 win over Lincoln Arndt of Maple River, defeated Kalib Greenman of Canby 6-1 and topped Miles Fitzgerald of Fairmont/MCW 3-0 to fight his way into the third place match. There, he would run into Howk again and would fall by major decision 10-1 to finish the tournament with six wins.
Sophomore Kaleb Haase went 3-3 to earn a sixth place finish at 220 pounds. He opened with three straight wins, including a technical fall and a 6-2 win over Austin Einerson of BOLD. In the semifinals he would fall 9-2 to Adam Skogman of Maple Grove and then lost by fall to Schmiesing of Wabasso/RRC. In the fifth place match he would meet up with Einerson again but this time lost by fall in the second period.
Senior Eric Bommersbach (7-8) finished in seventh at 170, going 4-2 overall with a 6-1 win over Lane Miller of New Ulm in the seventh place match. Owen Bertram went 2-3 at 113, Damico Arredondo went 1-2 at 106 with a fall, Matthew Zeug went 2-2 at 132, Omar Arredondo went 1-2 at 138 with a fall, Devin Johnson went 1-2 at 152, Andy Fischer was 2-2 at 160, Adam Bommersbach went 1-2 at 182 and Chad Maddock went 2-2 at Heavyweight.
