The surging fifth-ranked Redwood Valley football team stayed unbeaten Sept. 22 at Inglis Field with a 48-14 rout of visiting St. James Area.

The Cardinals (4-0) jumped out to an insurmountable 41-0 halftime lead and put it in cruise control from there for their fourth straight victory.

The Cards will face its first real test of the season Sept. 29 against Section 3AA rival Pipestone Area (4-0) who is also unbeaten and currently ranked eighth in the latest Class AA poll.

Friday night the Cards set the tone immediately, as senior Logan Josephson took the opening kickoff and rumbled 85-yard for a touchdown.

Shortly thereafter, Mitch Irlbeck would hook up with Cole Woodford on a 67-yard touchdown strike, and Josephson added a 48-yard touchdown scamper to give the Cards a 21-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

The rout continued the rest of the half, as senior Tommy Amberg added field goals of 25 and 28 yards. Josephson also scored on another long run of 52 yards and Woodford added his second touchdown of the night on a 13-yard strike from Irlbeck.

Sophomore Adam Bommersbach added a 4-yard touchdown run in the second half as the Cards called off the dogs leading 48-0. The Cardinals finished with 466 yards of total offense (most of that in the first half), including 309 on the ground compared to just 187 for the Saints.

Irlbeck finished 8-of-10 passing for 134 yards and two scores and added three carries for 19 yards. Josephson racked up 129 yards and two touchdowns on just five carries and had two receptions for 12 yards. Woodford continued his strong play at wideout, racking up three catches for 80 yards and two scores. Through four games he has 19 catches for 358 yards and five touchdowns.

Bommersbach had 10 carries for 60 yards, Andy Fischer had two carries for 19 yards, Logan Prouty added three carries for 18 yards, Jaxon Lang had one carry for 13 yards, Carter Johnson added three carries for 21 yards, Carter Guetter had three carries for seven yards, Josiah Hultquist had one carry for eight yards and Omar Arredondo had three carries for nine yards.

Alex Louwagie was 3-of-6 passing for 25 yards, Matthew Muetzel had one catch for 16 yards, Amberg added one catch for 16 yards and Kyle Huhnerkoch had one catch for 21 yards.

The Cardinals and Pipestone Area are both 4-0 in the Section 3AA standings with the winner in line for the top seed (although the championship game is played at a neutral site in Marshall). TMB is 3-1 and Windom Area 2-2 round out the top four.
