The Redwood Area Board of Education approved a change in its policy for the one-to-one technology program at its July 24 meeting.

According to Stephen Lien, Redwood Area School District director of technology, there has been a dramatic increase in the damages and subsequent repair costs to the Chromebooks being used by the students.

During the 2015-16 school year the repair costs were $2,668. During the 2016-17 school year that cost increased to $11,118.

Based on information Lien received it is the assumption that much of that damage is due to carelessness and a lack of consequences.

The previous policy provided a one-time exemption from damage responsibility, but under the new policy any damage to a Chromebook will come with a cost.

For the first time there is damage, the family will pay a $20 deductible, with any subsequent offenses resulting in that family paying the full cost of the repair.
