Kathleen Marie Schemel, 89, of Renville, died Saturday, July 22, 2017, at the Olivia Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Renville. The Rev. Rick Tuttle will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Renville. Visitation will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the services at the church in Renville. Kathleen Marie Schemel was born June 5, 1928, on the family farm in Beaver Falls Township, Renville County to Joseph and Eudora (Bierlein) Fischer. As a teen, Kathleen and her family moved to Sacred Heart. Kathleen graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1946, and then attended normal training to become a teacher. She was united in marriage to Gordon Schemel June 1, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Renville. Kathleen taught school for many years, beginning in North Redwood, then on to Belview. She later taught in Renville and Sacred Heart with the BDRSH and DRSH school districts. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Renville. She enjoyed spending her winters in Arizona, and Kathleen and Gordon hosted many yearly get together parties for the Renville area people who also wintered there. Her other hobbies included: doing crossword and word find puzzles, collecting chickens and tea cups and sewing sequins onto calendars. She and her friends also played Bridge for more than 50 years. Survivors include her sons and daughter: Steven of Renville, Thomas of Honolulu, HI, Daniel (and Maria) of Renville, and Patricia (and Paul) Olson of Hinckley; her seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; her sister Grace Lueck of Danube and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
