Wabasso/RRC to face Worthington
Finishing strong in the upper weights, the Wabasso/RRC wrestlers cruised past Quad County 42-22 Thursday night in the opening round of Section 3AA wrestling action.
The win catapulted the Bobcats into the semifinals (held Saturday in Wabasso) against Worthington. Marshall/Lakeview and Fairmont-MCW hooked up in the other semifinal with the winners advancing into the Section final (also wrestled Saturday).
Wrestling on their home turf, the Bobcats were the favorites heading into the Section semifinals but had close regular season duals with all three of the other semifinal teams.
The Bobcats - who actually fell to Quad County earlier in the season - had little trouble this time thanks to a deep line-up in the middle and upper weights.
Mitch Fulton (182), Devin Liebl (195) and Josh Hesse (120) all won by fall.
Jared Schroepfer (145) won by technical fall 15-0, Nick Altermatt (170) added a technical fall, Ben Johnson (113) picked up a 13-1 major decision and Tyson Doubler (138) also won by a major 10-2.
Isaac Schmiesing (220) was a 5-0 winner.

The Redwood-River Valley Badgers meanwhile had nice showing Thursday night despite falling 42-17 to number one seed Marshall/Lakeview in the quarterfinals.
The Badgers opened up by upsetting Montevideo UNITED 39-36, holding off a late rally by UNITED to earn the win the four-five match-up.
Winning six of the first seven matches the Badgers were able to get enough of a lead to hold on for the win.
Owen Bertram (106), Maverick Goblirsch (113), Matthew Zeug (132), Eric Bommersbach (145) and Devin Johnson (160) all won by fall.
Omar Arredondo (126) picked up an 11-2 major decision and Tayte Harazin (138) added a technical fall.
In the loss to the Tigers, Chad Maddock (220) won by fall, Adam Bommersbach (182) added an 11-0 major, Arredondo won 13-2 and Johnson (152) added a decision.
The Badgers and Bobcats will now gear up for the Section 3AA Individual Tournament which gets underway Friday and wraps up Saturday in Redwood Falls.
Wrestling will get underway at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday’s action will start at 10 a.m.
Seeding hasn’t taken place yet but the Badgers are hoping for top three seeds for sophomores Omar Arredondo (22-11) and Tayte Harazin (18-7) who both finished third a season ago.
Other wrestlers to keep an eye on for the Badgers include: Owern Bertram (17-12), Maverick Goblirsch (17-9), Kaleb Haase (12-11) and Eric Bommersbach (15-11).
