Nelsen scores career-high six goals in rout of Worthington

Connor Nelsen scored a career-high six goals and Bailey Sommers recorded yet another hat trick, as the Redwood Valley boys hockey team crushed Worthington 15-2 in a Big South Conference battle Thursday night in Redwood Falls.
The Cardinals (12-11, 9-7) led 5-0 after one period of play and scored six more times in the second to put the game well out of reach.
Reed Stadther found the net just 20 seconds into the game to set the tone for the Cards.
Kaleb Johnson scored just over 1:20 later, and Nelsen would add a short-handed goal at the 6:15 mark of the period and the rout was on.
Johnson would add his second of the night later in the period, and Nelsen added his second in the frame to give the Cards a 5-0 lead after one.
The scoring barrage continued in the second, as Nelsen and Sommers scored just 45 seconds apart early on.
Bryce Olson would finally get the Trojans on the board with a power play goal, but the Cards responded with four straight. Cordell Plass, Sommers, Chris Wersal and Nelsen all scored to put the Cards up 11-1.
In the third, Stadther would tally his second, Nelsen added two more goals to cap off a sick six goal effort and Sommers added his third of the night with just 52 seconds remaining.
Sommers now has the statewide lead in goals scored with 43 (Bauer Neudecker of St. Louis Park is second with 38) and is seventh in total points with 64.
Tucker Machart led the team with three assists, Johnson and Sommers both had two and Plass, Stadther, Will O’Halloran, Nelsen, Cameran Sommers, Kevin Eriksson, Wersal and Keagan Bourke each had one.
Alex Barnes had a nice night in goal, finishing with 23 saves.
The Cardinals were in action over the weekend at Willmar and travel to Sauk Centre today to face Prairie Centre in a non-conference match-up.
