Cardinals spoil return of former Coach Markus Okeson in 67-51 victory
The Redwood Valley boys basketball team spoiled the return of former Head Coach Markus Okeson with a 67-51 victory over Hutchinson Tuesday night in a non-conference match-up.
Okeson - who led the Cardinals to a pair of State Tournament berths during his six-year tenure - had his winless Tigers (0-10) hot early on but the Cards (9-6) would battle through it for a convincing victory.
The win ended a two-game skid and should give the team some momentum heading into a busy stretch of homes games beginning Friday with Worthington, Tracy/Milroy-Balaton (Monday) and Marshall (Tuesday).
Hutchinson came out firing early on, taking a 13-6 lead on a three-pointer from Vilt Fletcher.
Sophomore Cole Woodford was having none of that however, as he knocked down five three’s to help the Cards rally for a 20-18 lead.
From there, the Cards would go on a 25-7 run to lead comfortably 45-27 at the half.
Woodford had six three’s in the first half alone and would finish with eight total on the way to a game-high 24 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Mitch Irlbeck shot 8-of-13 from the floor on the way to 18 points and eight rebounds and James Pendleton added eight points and four assists.
Thomas Benson finished with six points and two rebounds, Kyle Huhnerkoch had four points and two boards and Caden Hanna had two points and six rebounds.
Cain Bratsch added three points, three rebounds and four assists and Dalton Siegfried pitched in with four rebounds and three steals
