Arredondo places fourth, Maddock fifth to pace Badgers
It was a crazy weekend of wrestling in Redwood Falls as the Redwood-River Valley Badgers hosted a triangular Friday night, the Big South Conference Individual Tournament on Saturday and the 9th grade Sectional Tournament on Monday.
Friday night the Badgers hosted Fulda/MCC and state-ranked Minneota in a competitive triangular.
The Badgers dominated Fulda/MCC 48-6 and would fall to seventh-ranked Minneota 51-16.
In the win over Fulda/MCC, the Badgers picked up a first period fall from Owen Bertram at 106 pounds.
Matthew Zeug (120), Tayte Harazin (126), Omar Arredondo (132), Trevor Groebner (138), Tommy Amberg (152), James Ploeger (160) and Adam Bommersbach (170) all won by forfeit as Fulda/MCC had just three wrestlers.
Maverick Goblirsch (113) and Eric Bommersbach (145) both lost close decisions.
The Badgers then squared off with Minneota and Bertram would earn his second straight fall with a 33 second pin over Eric Carrasco at 106 pounds.
Arredondo earned a 10-1 major decision at 126, Bommersbach won by fall over Kyle Banks at 145.
Harazin wrestled well in a losing cause, falling 4-3 to Brendan Reiss who is ranked eighth in Class A at 132 pounds.
Goblirsch lost a tough 14-9 decision at 113, Groebner lost 8-0 at 138 and Ploeger battled hard but would fall 10-7 at 160.
Saturday the Badgers hosted the Big South Conference Individual Tournament and got a fourth place finish from Arredondo at 126 and a fifth from Chad Maddock at 220 pounds.
Arredondo opened with a 9-1 major decision over Lay K Paw of Worthington and followed with a 12-0 major over Cole Kapplinger of JCC in the quarterfinals.
In the semis he ran into a buzzsaw in Michael Suda (21-0), who is the unbeaten, number one-ranked wrestler in Class A at 126 pounds, falling in the third period by fall.
In the third place match he would lose again by fall, this time to Zach Ringnell of Fairmont/MCW who is ranked sixth in Class AA at 138 pounds.
Maddock meanwhile would drop his quarterfinal bout to Jacob Hertzog of Waseca but answered back with a second period fall over Eli Mutz of Windom/Mt. Lake in the wrestlebacks. In the fifth place match he earned another fall, this time in the third period over Noah Linscheid of New Ulm Area to finish 2-1 on the day.
Eighth-grader Jaxon Lang went 1-2 in a difficult 120 pound weight class that feature a number of ranked wrestlers.
He dropped his first round match but would earn a first period fall over Justyce Ripka of Luverne in the wrestlebacks.
He then fell by technical fall to Jordan Wolter of Fairmont/MCW who is ranked eighth in Class AA at 120 pounds.
At 152 pounds, Amberg won his first match 14-7 over Logan Preuss of JCC but would drop his next two to finish 1-2.
Ploeger also went 1-2 at 160, earning a 5-4 decision over Jacob Neuberger of Worthington in the wrestlebacks.
Brayden Reynolds (132), Groebner (138), Eric Bommersbach (145) and Adam Bommersbach (170) all finished 0-2.
The Cards hosted the 9th grade Sectional on Monday and captured the event for the first time in school history.
