Redwood-River Valley edges ACGC 38-33 to win 9th-grade-and-under Section Meet
The Redwood-River Valley wrestlers captured the 9th-grade-and-under Sectional team title Monday night at the RVHS gymnasium.
The Badgers defeated Montevideo UNITED 49-21 and ACGC 38-33 to advance to the State Tournament held over the weekend in Hastings.
In the win over UNITED, the Badgers opened the match with an 8-6 win from Carter Brandt and a 7-0 victory by Damico Arredondo.
After UNITED tied the score at six with a fall, Maverick Goblirsch picked up a big second period fall to up the lead to 12-6.
With the score tied at 12, Joe Anderson needed just 23 seconds to record a fall at 126 and Kadin Johnson followed with a 35 second fall at 132 to increase the Badger lead to 24-12.
Brayden Reynolds picked up a big 8-6 win at 138 and Andy Fischer added a third period fall at 152 for a 33-18 lead.
Mason Rummel picked up a fall at 160, Adam Bommersbach earned a 14-0 major at 170 and Kaleb Haase added a first period fall at 190 to put the match away.
The Badgers then got into a great battle with ACGC that went right down to the wire.
Trailing 33-20 with three matches to go, the Badgers picked up first period falls from Bommersbach (170), Haase (190) and Chad Maddock (Hwt.) to close out the match with 18 straight points and a 38-33 victory.
Earlier, the Badgers got a big overtime win from Brandt, a technical fall from Anderson, a 28 second fall from Johnson and a 46 second fall from Fischer.
Reynolds lost a tough 5-4 battle and Arredondo fell 5-2.
