Sommers explodes for five goals in 8-1 rout of Morris/Benson Area

After a quiet Christmas tournament, senior Bailey Sommers erupted for five goals to lead Redwood Valley to an 8-1 rout of host Morris-Benson Area Thursday night in Big South Conference hockey action.
The Cardinals (7-5, 5-2) dominated the action from the get-go, eventually outshooting the host Storm 67-13 on the night.
Sommers had a hat trick by the end of the first period and would finish with five on the night to up his conference leading goal tally to 22.
Chris Wersal, Connor Nelsen and Kaleb Johnson all added goals.
Hunter Tholkes, Will O’Halloran and Jack Ryan each had two assists.
Reed Stadther, Cordell Plass, Logan Prouty, Johnson, Nelson and Kevin Eriksson each added one assist.
Alex Barnes had 12 saves to pick up the win in net.
Redwood Valley stayed very much alive in the race for the conference title, as New Ulm (5-7-1, 3-3) topped Luverne 4-1 to drop Luverne to 6-2 in conference play and 9-4-1 overall.
