Redwood Valley boys looking for fourth straight win after 1-3 start
The Redwood Valley boys basketball team will look to build on a three-game winning streak heading into the annual Hometown Bank Holiday Classic Thursday and Friday in Redwood Falls.
The Cardinals (4-3) have won three straight games after a 1-3 start to the season (although the opponents in those three losses have a combined record of 16-3) and will open tonight at 8 p.m. against Benson in one quarterfinal match-up.
It will be the second year in a row that Cardinal Head Coach Aaron Lindahl will square off against his father Roger, the longtime coach of the Braves.
A year ago the Cardinals rolled to a 94-68 win over the Braves on the way to the championship. The team would top Lakeview 76-60 in the title game.
Both teams have relatively new rosters, with the Cardinals returning James Pendleton and Mitch Irlbeck and the Braves returning senior guard Layton Connelly and center Zack Sonnabend.
The Braves are off to a 1-4 start, missing the presence of graduated twins Adam and Andrew Lindahl (19 points and 14 points against the Cards), siblings of Aaron.
Lakeview (3-2) will face Martin Co. West (0-7) in the first of the two semifinal match-ups at 6:30 p.m.
The Cardinal girls meanwhile return as the defending HTB Classic champs but will face a tough field that included opening round opponent Lakeview (3-4).
The Cardinals (0-10) are looking for their first victory of the season but have played well of late and could give the Lakers a run.
A season ago, senior Lexi Klinkner had 10 points and five rebounds in the Cards 59-49 championship win over Dawson/Boyd but the Cardinals have a relatively brand new roster from a season ago.
Dawson/Boyd (4-3) will face Sibley East (3-5) in the first semifinal match-up at 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
Winners advance to the championship games Friday.
