Karnitz, Menz pace Redwood Valley cross country teams

Led by a pair of top ten finishes from Lauren Karnitz and Haylee Sovell, the Redwood Valley girls cross country team earned a second place finish Tuesday afternoon at the Big South Conference Meet held in Worthington.
Karnitz finished fourth in a time of 19:50, while Sovell knocked nine seconds off of her personal best to place tenth in a time of 20:45.
A strong Luverne team won the team event with 29 points, followed by Redwood Valley (71) and Pipestone Area (81) in the seven-team race.
Seventh-grader Catherine Buffie (21:50) continued to run well, recording a season best to place 16th.  Sidney Beran (22:02) was 17th.
Mackenzie Lydick (22:55) placed 24th, Elizabeth Prouty (23:37) was 30th and Jasmine Barnes (23:43) finished 32nd.
In JV competition, eighth-grader Jayne Russell (24:11) led the way with a sixth place finish and Mimi Krause set a personal best time of 24:54 to finish 11th.
The Cards finished second behind Luverne in the JV team competition.
Julia Prouty (25:07) was 13th, Breanna Beran (26:04) 19th, Payton Schueller (26:10) 20th and Sophie Uhlenkamp (26:22) 21st to round out the top six.
The Cardinals boys meanwhile placed third overall with a pair of top ten finishes from Carter Menz and Aaron Boyle.
Menz was seventh with a time of 17:05, while Boyle placed 10th in 17:27.
Windom Area captured the team event with 32 points, followed by St. James Area (65) and the Cardinals (83).
Xander Seaman (18:22) claimed a personal best time to finish 19th and Sam Kahnke (18:24) also had a career best to finish 21st.
Jayson Peyerl (19:06) was 26th, Connor DeGonda (19:15) 29th and Deon Estebo  (19:16) finished 30th.
The Cardinal JV team placed fourth led by a ninth place finish from Luke Hammerschmidt (19:45).
Leo Steffl (20:35) was 17th, Gavin Dow (20:45) 19th, Shane Liebl (20:51) 21st, Grant Liebl (20:59) 22nd and Spencer Gilk (21:01) 23rd to round out the top six.
