1960—50 years ago

• By coincidence, two Redwood Falls High School graduates—David Halvorson, class of ‘50, and M.P. Nelson, class of ‘41—were chosen to present papers at a scientific conference about chemical engineering in Wilmington, Delaware.

• James Goblish and Susan Poynter were selected by their classmates to represent Redwood Falls High School at the Boys and Girls State.

• Redwood Falls area residents told a state legislative sub-committee that they pledged to donate $100,000 in land and equipment toward a new four-year college if it located here.

• “North Redwood Village” opened bids on a new link to connect up to Redwood Falls’ water supply system. 

• Scoutmasters Blaine Farnberg and Dr. James Flinn arranged for the about 50 Redwood Falls Boy Scouts to receive special letters from Washington D.C. postmarked to commemorate the Scout’s 50th anniversary.

 

1985—25 years ago

• Redwood Falls fire crews helped put out the blaze when the Franklin water tower burst into flames during repairs. 

• Blaine Farnberg, owner of Harrold’s shoe store since 1955, sold the business to long-time employee Warren Vanderwerf.

• Reality set in for Morton High School students in grades 9-11 when they were bused to Redwood Falls High School to become familiar with the new school they would be attending the following the autumn.

• Joel Knapp won a 20-inch dirt bike from Pamida for catching the largest fish during the Jaycees’ fishing contest.

• RFHS Spirit Week had the following themes:

• Monday: Rock Star T-shirt day

• Tuesday: Autograph Day

• Wednesday: Plaid Day

• Thursday: Red and White Day

• Friday: Hawaiian Shirt Day.

 

2000—10 years ago

• St. Catherine’s Catholic Church announced it was ready to begin construction of a new $3 million addition to the existing structure, more than doubling its space.

• Attorney Matthew Haapoja, of the Redwood Falls-Morton High School class of 1988, was named one of 100 Minnesotans to watch by Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine for his political activities on behalf of the Republican party. 

• “Hauberk” was the word that gained sixth grader Ben Zeise the middle school spelling bee championship. (A hauberk is a long tunic of chain mail.)

• Bids for the Redwood Area Community Center construction came in $119,000 under budget.

• “Couple Slain, Police Suspect Homicide” was chosen by Gazette staff as the worst headline seen in a newspaper other than the Gazette.
