‘October Baby’ is worth seeing

When I first heard about the movie “October Baby” I wondered what kind of message it would portray on the big screen.
If one solely went by the reviews I checked out prior to going and seeing it for myself, I would have gone into seeing the film with a bit of cynicism.
After all, the movie critics used words like controversial and polarizing to describe this film – all because of its topic.

Muetzels offer talents to Dollars for Scholars

Lawrence and June Muetzel's children all graduated from the Redwood Falls schools, so donating items for auction at this year's Dollars for Scholars fund seemed like giving back.

Get Lawrence and June talking about their talents, though, and you'll find they'd rather talk about the other's.

Movie night at Redwood Alliance

It is hard for any man to admit being a father is a challenging role, but finding the courage to seek a better relationship with one’s heavenly father and as a result a better relationship with one’s children can be accomplished.
Taking that first step is the topic of a Sherwood Pictures (the makers of Fireproof) film called Courageous, and this Friday night Redwood Alliance Church in Redwood Falls is hosting a free showing of the movie.

From Redwood to the red carpet

At one point during Nick Stanton’s climb up the Hollywood ladder, he made a promise to his mom, Judie Fox.
That promise — based on her request — was if he ever made it to the red carpet she would be his date.
“I was somewhat kidding,” said Fox.
Stanton took it seriously, and after hearing a piece he and his co-writer Devin Bunje had written was up for nomination for a Writers Guild award he called and told his mom....

Hollywood actor David Frankham discovers Redwood life

Sergeant Tibbs, the cat who saved the puppies in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, is in Redwood Falls this week.
So is Larry Marvick, the 23rd century engineer who helped design the starship Enterprise on Star Trek.
Actually, they and many others are all here in the person of retired British actor David Frankham, who’s making a repeat visit to Redwood this week to visit friends.
“Redwood Falls is a very friendly place. It’s like a backlot set of a perfect little American town you’d see in a movie,” he said earlier this week, having lunch in a coffee shop.

COLLECTION CONNECTION — Virginia Fabrizius’ skydiving ornaments recall times in the air

Virginia Fabrizius threw herself out of an airplane for the first time when she was 19 years old.
She was living in the Twin Cities, and some friends from vo-tech suggested they go sky-diving across the border, in Baldwin, Wisconsin.
“It was old military gear, really heavy equipment,” she said last week, adding, “We made five jumps.”
Since then, Fabrizius has made over 800 jumps, the highest time from over 18,000 feet.
In 1990, Fabrizius got her first Christmas ornament with a skydiving theme. Today she owns 56 skydiving ornaments, and is always on the search for more.
“Every Christmas I tell my kids, ‘You know what to do!’ and they say, ‘Yeah, look for skydiving ornaments.’”

COLLECTION CONNECTION - Nelson’s leather-bound books will last generations

Jan Craig Nelson doesn’t have much time to read these days. As a child support magistrate for Redwood and 10 neighboring counties, he spends a lot of time out on the road and in the office.
But when he gets the chance to read, he’s got the books to do it with.
Spread out in his home and old downtown law office, he’s got over 100 leather-bound books, “the vast majority of which I’ve not yet read,” he admitted last week.

Bailey’s eye

For Christmas a couple fo years ago, Bailey Hansen’s parents got her a digital DSLR camera.
Ever since, the RVHS senior has been clicking away taking photos of everything from people to still life.
Hansen’s eye for things photographic was confirmed recently by Buena Vista University and the school’s art and graphic design department.
A couple of months ago Hansen submitted five photos she had taken to a high school art student competition called the Western Iowa Salon Exhibition (WISE).
“They picked four of my photos for the show,” said Hansen, adding there were 60 pieces of art selected for the show out of 160 entries.

Raising funds for cancer research has never been so fun.

Storyland opens at Redwood library

Austin Gunderson walked quickly into a room filled with amazing adventures, stopped, turned his head to the left then the right and one could see he was not sure where to go first.
Should he build a snowman, hear snow crunch under his feet, read a Spot story or enjoy time in Peter Rabbit’s house.
The good news is he and others can do all of them at the Redwood Falls Public Library as part of a new traveling exhibit called Storyland which is on loan from the Minnesota Children’s Museum.

While the group started in Sibley County back in 1953 as the Sibley County Senior Citizens Hobby band, the group continued to expand, so nearly six decades later the group includes people from a wide variety of communities and walks of life.

Ramsey Park celebrates its 100th birthday

June 28, 1912 was a big day in the history of Redwood Falls.
Nearly 5,000 people, more than lived in the town at the time, turned out to witness Governor Adolph O. Eberhart proclaim the official opening of Alexander Ramsey Park.
A ladies’ chorus and the Redwood Falls Military Band provided music while hundreds ate a picnic lunch at tables or cloths on the ground.
Every elected official in the state except the railroad commissioner came to Redwood Falls to tour the new state park.
It was the first-ever Ramsey Park Jamboree, and when it was over, it ended a story that began in the 1890s, when Dr. J.H. Riheldaffer purchased the lots where the Redwood River met Ramsey Creek.
