The old Firestone tire dealership on E. Bridge Street was demolished this week to make room for a new extension of the Redwood Area Hospital. Current plans call for Redwood Industries to build a new 8,000 square foot building on the lot. The building would be leased to the hospital for 10 years. In turn, the hospital plans to sublease approximately half the new building to Davita Total Renal Care as a new area facility for kidney dialysis. Davita has had a contract to provide dialysis treatment in the hospital for years, but wanted to expand. Since the hospital is landlocked, adding more square footage to the current hospital facility was impractical. After talking with Redwood Industries to explore options, the Hospital Commission decided to expand the hospital’s services to another site in the city, That also gave the hospital staff the opportunity to expand several other departments: Adult Day services, and the Homecare / Hospice department. Current plans call for the house the Homecare / Hospice department is based in to be repurposed back into a potential dwelling once the new facility is up and running. Having those departments based in a separate building will also free up some space in the hospital facility. Plans call for the hospital to expand its sleep studies department into the current dialysis space in the west end of the hospital. In addition, the Redwood Area Hospital is hoping to expand its services to accommodate a possible joint replacement program and activities center for its swing bed program.
