  • Franklin to host Catfish Derby Days July 25-27

  • For the 39th time, the City of Franklin is going to be a much busier place this coming weekend, as the annual Catfish Derby Days celebration is being held. Activities begin Friday and continue through Sunday in Minnesota’s Cat-fishin’ Capital. The featured event of the weekend is the annual catfish fishing contest, which is set to begin at 3 p.m. Friday and continues until noon Sunday. Those planning to take part in the fishing contest need to register at city hall before they start fishing. A $10 registration fee is required, with those under age 10 able to compete for a $5 fee. To find out the rules of the contest, including information about new invasive species regulations, one should call (320) 583-0763 or visit the Catfish Derby Days Web site. Another of the Friday events is the annual Miss Franklin contest and variety show, which is taking place at Cedar Mountain Elemen-tary starting at 7:30 p.m. There are two contestants.
    The candidates are Nicole Forsyth and Nereida Villegas. Nicole Forsyth is the daughter of Missy For-syth and Dan Forsyth. Her school activities include FFA, school play, band and serving on the blood drive committee. She also likes to spend time playing volleyball and softball, hanging out with her friends and spending time at the lake. She is going to do photography for her talent. Nereida Villegas is the daughter of Juan Villegas and Leticia Villegas. Her school activities include FFA, basketball, volleyball and band. In her spare time she also enjoys riding her horse. Villegas plans to play the saxophone for her talent. Some of the other activities during the Catfish Days are: •  A 12-team softball tournament held Friday and Saturday • The chess tournament Friday and Satur-day starting at 10 a.m. • The fireman’s kickball tournament Friday at 8:15 p.m. • A bean bag tournament Saturday with registration at 11 a.m. • A co-ed volleyball tournament Saturday starting at 1 p.m. • The annual football players auction Saturday at 8:45 p.m. • A craft and vendor fair Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. • The Kiss the Fish contest Saturday at 8:15 p.m. Donations are being accepted until 2 p.m. that day. • Church services at St. Luke’s at 9 a.m. and at Sacred Heart Church at 10:30 a.m. • The Kiddie Parade Sunday at 1 p.m. • The grand parade Sunday at 1:30 p.m. • Kids’ pedal pull is being held Sunday after the parade • Kids waterball Sunday afternoon • A street dance is being held Friday from 8 p.m. until midnight and Saturday from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. There are a number of food stands, a beer wagon and other soft drinks available throughout the weekend. Attendees are asked not to carry in intoxicating beverages. The public is encouraged to stop in Franklin this weekend.
