  • In the Redwood area, Morton is the place to go on the Fourth of July. As the day goes by, folks around the Redwood valley congregate in Morton to browse the flea market, have fun playing the youth activities, sample the food and concessions, and have dinner at the pork chop feed. Certainly the attraction that brings the most people is the evening fireworks show, traditionally one of the most spectacular displays in the area. Events this year actually start the day before. At 6 p.m. on July 3, the Morton fire department’s kickball tournament begins. As for the Fourth of July itself, events include: • 8 a.m.: The annual Morton Firecracker four mile run / two mile fun run/walk, starting at the Brent Koch Memorial Shelter in the park. All age and skill levels are invited to participate. • 9 a.m.: softball tournaments begin. • 10 a.m.: Independence Day parade, starting at the old Morton School, and proceeding down 3rd St., around the park, and back to the school by way of County Road 18. • 11 a.m. - Boxcar derby • 11 a.m.-8 p.m.: Flea market, crafts, and food vendors, kids activities. • 1 p.m.: bean bag tournament. • 2-6 p.m.: inflatables for kids. • 1-5 p.m.: Bingo sponsored by the Morton Sr. Center. • 4-7 p.m.: pork chop feed hosted by the Morton Fire Department. • 7 p.m.: kids’ pedal pull, sponsored by Harvestland Co-op. • 8 p.m.: raffle drawing (tickets available neer the beer garden, with proceeds to go toward event expenses. • Dusk: fireworks. (Note: for the personal safety of everyone, the city of Morton asks no personal fireworks be used on the park premises.)
