  • Education is more than what happens in a book, and students in the Redwood Area School District continue to see how they can make a difference and learn along the way. Two Family and Consumer Science (FACS) classes at RVHS learned they could put the skills they learned in class to help others as they created quilts, pillow cases and dresses to give away. The FACS Explora-tions class and the artistic design class spent time during their school year making items in an effort to develop this skills, and then they gave away what they had made to causes in the area. “The students selected the places where what they made would go,” said Ruth Zeise, FACS teacher, adding over the past several years hundreds of items have been donated from the school. Zeise said the fabric was donated to the program by Jean Lepper years ago, and the students have designed the items donated. This year the students donated quilts and pillow cases to the Choices Pregnancy Center, the Redwood Area Hospital Hospice program and South-west Health and Human Services. In addition, Courtney Filzen, a high school sophomore, made three dresses that are being sent to Africa. There, she said, they are going to be given to little girls who don’t have basic items one can easily get here. The donation is part of a We Day program. “It feels great to help others,” said Filzen, adding being able to use what she learned for the benefit of people who are less fortunate is something she is happy to do.
