  • In 2013, the Redwood Area Food Shelf distributed 185,084 pounds of food to Redwood residents. That’s over 92 and a half tons of food. Receiving those tons were 9,147 individuals stopping by the food shelf for supplies last year, with another 2,670 households applying. And demand is up this year, according to David Mumme of the food shelf. March is the traditional month when Minnesota food shelves have their main drives for the year. As part of that, Redwood’s Boy Scouts will be going door to door this Saturday morning, March 22 to collect bags of food. The bags will be brought to the Redwood Area Food Shelf by late morning to be weighed and recorded. The amount of food and dollars the food shelf raises this month will be used to calculate how much it can receive in matching grants for the rest of the year. If you’re considering donating to the Redwood Area Food Shelf, gifts of food or cash are more than welcome any time. But if you only donate once a month, March is the time to do it. Last year the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign raised more than $8.3 million and almost four million pounds of food, to be distributed by about 300 food shelves statewide. For more information about the food shelf’s March fundraiser and food drive, call Dave Mumme at 507-430-1495.
