  • The clock finally struck midnight for the Redwood Valley girls basketball team as a hot-shooting Kenyon-Wanamingo team jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 64-31 victory over the Cardinals Wednesday night in Class AA State Quarterfinal action held at Mariucci Arena. The Knights (30-1) - who earned the second seed in the tournament - jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead and then took advantage of a cold shooting Cardinal team to go on a 31-5 run to lead 39-8 with time running down in the first half. Redwood Valley junior Lauren Hanson would end the half with four straight but the Cards (19-10) would still trail 39-12 at the break. It was a tough first half offensively for the Cards as they shot just 5-of-24 from the floor (20 percent) compared to 11-of-22 (50 percent) for the Knights (including five three’s and a 12-of-14 clip from the charity stripe). The Cardinals showed some heart by coming out and scoring the first seven points of the second half but the Knights would answer with eight straight of their own and would go on to claim the victory and a spot in Friday’s Class AA semifinals against Esko. Senior Tara Sandgren led the way for the Cards scoring 13 points (3-of-5 shooting from downtown) and Hanson had 11 points (5-of-8 shooting), seven rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Victoria Quast chipped in with three points, MaKenzie Mace had two points, three rebounds and two assists and Alison Curry battled an early injury and foul trouble to score two points. The Cards shot just 33 percent from the floor (12-of-36) and were outrebounded 30-18. Siri Sviggum paced the Knights with 23 points and six rebounds, going 9-of-11 from the floor. Brittney Flom added 14 points and three assists and Megan Clark had 11 points. The Knights shot a solid 54 percent from the floor (21-of-39), 47 percent from long range (7-of-15) and were 15-of-19 from the line.
