  • Rice Home Medical, a subsidiary of Rice Hospital in Willmar, opened the latest incarnation of its Redwood Falls branch last week.
“Last year we saw a 13 percent growth in our business, and it’s only going to keep growing,” said Briana Mumme, branch manager, last week. “As the Baby Boomers age, there’s a new movement to keep people in their homes as long as possible.”
“We use Rice Memoria Hospital’s finance, billing, IT, and human resources departments, but we’re a separate entity,” Mumme explained.
“We’re a full-line medical equipment company,” said Mumme. “We supply everything from sponge gauze to hospital beds. We do everything. Just today we were delivering crutches to a three-year old boy.”
Rice Home Medical has existed for over 25 years, with a branch in Redwood Falls for about 15 of those.
However, the new facility is the fourth in town.
“We started off near the NAPA building, then moved over to Industrial Drive, then to the winery, and now here,” said Mumme. “With this new building, we wanted to make a strong statement of establishment in Redwood Falls.”
Although it has a nice new facility, much of Rice Home Medical’s business is via delivery.
“Many of our clients can’t come to us, so we go to them,” Mumme said.
Generally, the Redwood Fall branch will cover the part of southwestern Minnesota to our south — areas to the north will be covered by the Willmar branch.
Rice Home Medical also has branches in Alexandria and Madison, Minn.
In addition to individuals, clients include large facilities like the Redwood Area Hospital and ACMC clinic.
Most of Rice Home Medical’s business comes from referrals.
“If you’ve seen a physician or therapist, or if you’re in a nursing home, they might have recommendations for equipment you’d need.”
The new facility has separate departments for customer service, delivery, clinical services, education, and testing.
“We have added three new people to our organization, for a total of nine on our staff here,” said Mumme.
Rice Home Medical also has a contractor who specializes in home modifications such as adding items such as railings, chair lifts, and bathtubs.
A new addition is Bellaforma, a boutique catering to women.
Rice Home Medical is currently planning on hosting an open house at its new facility in mid-January.
