  • From an early age, Rebecca Simonsen wanted to be part of the medical profession in some way.
“Growing up my brother was going to be the doctor, with me as nurse,” she said.
While Simonsen did follow through and become a nurse, her new role has brought her closer to the level of practicing physician.
Simonsen is a nurse practitioner, and she is offering her health services in the Redwood area through the Avera medical clinic site in Redwood Falls.
Simonsen, who started her role at the local clinic two weeks ago today, is a full-time nurse practitioner.
The Avera clinic, located on Bridge Street, is part of the Avera Medical Group in Marshall which opened the satellite site in Redwood Falls in March.
It’s initial focus had been on providing outreach to the community, with physicians visiting the local site offering a variety of services on a part-time basis.
The vision from the beginning, however, has been to bring on full-time medical staff, and it is now able to do that with Simonsen.
Simonsen, who is originally from western North Dakota, moved with her husband to the Sleepy Eye area where they reside on a farm which has been in the family for some time.
Simonsen took her nursing experience to Mankato where she worked as a nurse and gained a wide range of practical experiences she believes can help her in her role as a nurse practitioner.
Over the years, Simonsen has worked in a variety of settings from urgent care to rehab, and prior to becoming a nurse practitioner had served in medical facilities as an RN for a number of years. Simonsen said she specializes in pain management and is certified to treat headache issues.
According to Simonsen, a nurse practitioner is a medical professional who can function in a health setting on their own.
“I can see any patient a physician sees,” she said, adding her role is just like what a practicing physician would offer.
During her growing up years, Simonsen said her brother spent a lot of time in the hospital, and it was during that experience when she was inspired to enter the medical profession. It was the doctors who treated the whole person and were approachable who helped convince her to pursue a career in medicine.
As a nurse practitioner, Simonsen said she wants to bring that same philosophy of medicine to her role – providing quality care.
In addition to seeing patients, Simonsen said she is willing to offer education programming to those in the community who may be in-terested in that.
Simonsen and her family continue to live in the Sleepy Eye area, adding she is now traveling west rather than east to get to work.
