The first Thanksgiving Day 5K is taking place in Redwood Falls; called the Turkey Trot, the event is being held as a fundraiser for the Redwood Falls Youth for Christ program.
Are you planning to do a little bit of eating this Thanksgiving?
If so, you might want to consider getting out in advance of that meal and doing a bit of exercise to ensure at least a few of those added pounds have been addressed.
A new event is providing Thanksgiving connoisseurs with the chance to do that very thing. The first Thanksgiving Day 5K is taking place in Redwood Falls.
Called the Turkey Trot, the event is being held as a fundraiser for the Redwood Falls Youth for Christ program.
According to Chris Schmitz, Redwood Falls Youth for Christ director, the idea to have a 5K run/walk on Thanksgiving Day came to him from Vicki Phillips.
“Vicki has been doing a 5K for several years, and she asked me if I was interested in doing it to help benefit YFC,” said Schmitz.
Knowing Phillips would be there along the way to help the event run smoothly convinced Schmitz to give it a try.
The Turkey Trot is set to start at 9 a.m. at SNAP Fitness in Redwood Falls.
Schmitz said registration is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
He stressed the fact that this is a walk or run for participants, adding those who plan to walk the route are going to be leaving about 15 minutes before 9 a.m.
The race is taking what Schmitz called the north loop of the community, which would have them go past Activeaid and utilize a part of the city’s bike path
A donation of $10 is being suggested for participants.
Schmitz added the race is also being utilized as a fundraiser for the Redwood Area Food Shelf, and those who plan to participate are asked to bring three items to donate to the food shelf.
An event like this can help to get one’s metabolism going before sitting down to that big meal, said Schmitz, adding proceeds are going to good causes in the community.
He added everything should be wrapped up by 10 a.m.
“We want to make this fun and as simple as possible,” he said.
