  • A grand jury has elected to indict Andrew Joseph Dikken on six counts of first degree murder after convening ast week.
Dikken, 28, of Renville, had been charged with two counts of second-degree murder for the September 2 shootings of Kara Monson, 26, of Granite Falls, and Chris Panitzke, 28, of Redwood Falls.
At an October 30 arraignment hearing, Yellow Medicine County prosecuting attorneys announced that they would not accept Dikken’s petition to plead guilty on two counts of second degree murder and that they would convene a grand jury.
Dikken has been charged with three counts of murder for each victim. Murder in the first degree - pre-meditated, first degree murder while committing burglarly and first degree murder while committing or attempting arson.
If convicted on either of the two counts of pre-meditated murder, the minimum sentence Dikken would receive is life without possibility of parole. The counts involving burglary and arson would allow Dikken to eventually be eligible to be considered for release.
According to a complaint report, Panitzke told police officers that  Dikken gained entry to the Monson household, turned on a light and  opened fire on the pair as they lay sleeping. Monson died at the scene while Panitzke passed several days later on September 8. It was also discovered that gas lines at the house had been cut.
According to YMC Assistant County Attorney Stacy Vinberg, presiding District Judge Thomas Van Hon has waived all timelines and continued a bail amount of $3 million.
At this point no court dates have beemn set. Vinberg said it would likely be a few months before the next court date is held.
