Christmas memories often invoke thoughts of large dinners with family and decorated Christmas trees with gifts underneath; unfortunately for some, Christmas memories include huddling under one blanket and trying to keep warm, because they can’t afford to turn up the heat.

Unfortunately for some, Christmas memories include huddling under one blanket and trying to keep warm, because they can’t afford to turn up the heat.
There are just a few items of food that week’s paycheck could buy and no gifts under the tree.
Thankfully, those less fortunate in our area are able to have a decent Christmas due to the efforts of more than 100 volunteers of the Share the Spirit organization.
Share the Spirit served 266 families and 430 children in 2012. It also delivered fruit baskets and small gifts to residents of Redwood County nursing homes who don’t have family or visitors.
Each year, Share the Spirit relies on local residents for donations. It is a non-profit, 100 percent volunteer organization with no administrative or legal staff.
All contributions are used to provide for families less fortunate. Last year, Share the Spirit’s expenses were more than $12,000.
Anyone who would like to help Share the Spirit out this year can do so in one of a variety of ways – financial contributions, new toys, food and volunteers.
One nice way either you, your family or your business can contribute is by becoming a family sponsor. When you become a family sponsor, you provide the food and gift needs of one family. You work with the staff of Share the Spirit and are assigned a family that fits your budget.
You can also help by volunteering your time, donating new toys, quilts, blankets, mittens, books and food.
Volunteers are going to be on hand to answer any questions you may have and to accept donations starting Nov. 18 and running through Dec. 9. Phone lines are going to be open during that time as well, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at (507) 430-5229.
You can also contact Laurie Dolan at (507) 627-5579 after 3 p.m. or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Distribution days in Redwood Falls are Dec. 10-12 at the Redwood Falls National Guard Armory.
There is also a distribution site in Lamberton and this is going to be the 30th year distributing to that side of Redwood County.
That distribution day is Dec. 11 at the Lam-berton Community Center. Call Marg Weber at (507) 648-3442 or Mary Arnoldi at (507) 752-7657 for more info-.
Thank you for helping Share the Spirit keep the magic of Christmas alive.
