Delbert Sutherland, age 81, of St. James, died at his home on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013. Graveside services will be 12:45 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis with full military honors provided by the Ft. Snelling Honor Guard. You may send the family condolences at www.sturmfh.com. Delbert Lee Sutherland was born August 19, 1932, on the family farm near Mt. Lake, the son of Ray and Hulda (Gossen) Sutherland. Del grew up in the Butterfield area where he graduated from Butterfield High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from May 1953 until February 1955. Del married Ann Saline in Iowa on June 29, 1958. The couple made their home in various communities including Mankato, St. Peter, Minneapolis, Butterfield and St. James. Del and his brothers owned and operated a restaurant and bar in Minneapolis for some 15 years before moving to Butterfeild in 1975 where they operated Del's Tavern until retirement in 1996. Del loved sports, his favorite was football, when time allowed he also enjoyed fishing with his fishing buddy, Mike his dog. Del enjoyed reading sports articles as well in Sports Illustrated and Time. Del was a member of the Butterfield VFW where he served on the Honor Guard. Del loved spending time and visiting with family and friends.
Delbert Sutherland is survived by his wife, Ann Sutherland of St. James; sisters, Shirley Sizer of St. James, Marion Taylor of Coon Rapids; brother, Kerry Sutherland of Clearwater, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Keith, and Bob; and sisters, Betty and Beatrice.
