Roy Kuhlman, age 91, of Winthrop passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord.

Roy Kuhlman, age 91, of Winthrop passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, 11 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop with interment in the Winthrop Cemetery. Military Honors by the Winthrop Honor Guard. Roy Fredrick Kuhlman was born on February 5, 1922, in Madelia, Minnesota. He was the son of Fred and Erma (Seller) Kuhlman. Roy was baptized as an infant on March 16, 1922, by Pastor Lempke at Fieldon Lutheran Church in Lewisville and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth on April 26, 1936, by Reverend Rumsch at Zion Lutheran Church in Lewisville. Roy received his education in Truman and was a 1940 graduate of the Truman High School. He furthered his education at the University of Minnesota for one year. Roy enlisted in the Army Air Corp in July of 1942, entered active military service on March 12, 1944 and served his country during World War II in Italy. He received the KAME Theater Ribbon with Five Bronze Stars and the Air Medal with one OLC. He flew 20 combat missions in a B24. His plane went down due to damage from anti-aircraft fire on October 16, 1944, near Gospic, Yugoslavia. He was a POW in Germany until April 29, 1945. Roy was Honorably Discharged on October 25, 1945. He was in the Air Force Reserves in Hutchinson, earning the rank of Major. On July 22, 1945, Roy was united in marriage to Mollie Phipps at Zion Lutheran Church in Lewisville. After their marriage the couple farmed in Bismarck Township. They were blessed with five children. Roy and Mollie shared 68 years of marriage. Roy was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop and served as the Sunday School Superintendent, taught Sunday School, was on the building committee for the new church. He was also a member of the Young at Heart, AAL, the Prairie Land Chapter Ex POW Post, State and National; Winthrop Honor Guard, American Legion Post #314 and VFW Post #4078. Roy was a volunteer at WELS prison ministry. Roy enjoyed farming, fishing, playing harmonica and cards, hunting pheasant, turkey and deer; and loved raising raspberries. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  When he needed assistance with his daily care, Roy became a resident of Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord and passed away there on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at the age of 91 years. Roy is survived by his wife, Mollie Kuhlman of Winthrop; children, Richard (Diane) Kuhlman of East Bethel, Nancy (Dean) Lind of Henderson, Norman (Phyllis) Kuhlman of St. Peter, Elizabeth (Tim) Schmidt of Winthrop and Mary (Joesph) Larson of Mazeppa; 15 grandchildren, Paul (Sandy) Kuhlman, Beth Kuhlman, Jared (Reta) Lind, Greta (Corey) Fennell, Nicole (Jason) Borsheim, Jennifer (Shane) Milbrath, Josh (Becky) Schmidt, Adam (Jessica) Schmidt, Katie (Chad) Cisewski, Cassie (Dave) Hendrickson, Sara (Jon) Erickson, Emily (Bob) Flaaen, Andrew (Tory) Larson, Maria (Scott) Claussen, and William Larson; 24 great-grandchildren; siblings, Esther Lewis of Truman, and Ruth Ann Shaw of Mansfield, Ohio; sister-in-law, Lillian Kuhlman of Lewisville and Sussie Kuhlman of St. James; numerous nieces, nephews, nousins and friends.

Roy was preceded in death by his brothers, Merrill Kuhlman and Willis Kuhlman; sister, Marilyn (George) Wengert and Marjorie (Malcolm) Dewar; and brother-in-law, Ralph Lewis.
