  • Life is a lot like hiking and baseball, said Patrick Rohland Tuesday in Courtroom A of the Redwood County courthouse.
No, the one-time county and city attorney was not making a case in front of the local judge.
He was presenting his perspective on his new role in the legal system – Fifth District Court judge in Redwood County.
Rohland, who spoke before a group of area judges, family and members of the community after taking the oath of office talked about the people who have made a difference in his life and how their examples are going to impact how he serves as a judge.
When one goes on a hike, said Rohland, a little bit of dust gets on them.
That dust, he added, can then be used to tell the story of the hike itself.
People in one’s life are like the dust that sticks to you on a hike.
“You don’t go through a legal career without a little dust getting stuck to you,” he said.
Rohland then pointed out many in the courtroom witnessing his investiture as a judge and the dust they have “put on” him, adding every person in-volved in his life had made him who he is today and who he is going to be.
Whether it was Michelle Dietrich, who is now a district court judge in Lyon County, who “took a flyer” on an attorney from the metro area who wanted a different quality of life for himself and his family, or it was outgoing judge David Peterson, who Rohland is replacing on the bench, Rohland said the impact of many people is going to be demonstrated in how he serves as a judge.
“Judge Peterson, you have left a positive legacy,” said Rohland, adding he hopes to emulate the consistency and ability to look at the individual behind every case Peters-on demonstrated as he moves into the seat which is being vacated.
