Iona Marie Retka, 99, of Cold Spring died on August 22, 2013, at her home in Cold Spring.
Visitation will be Aug. 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Thomas Oratory in Sanborn.
Service will be held at the St. Thomas Oratory in Sanborn Aug. 29 at 1 p.m.
The clergy will be Father Phil Schotzko. Interment will be at the St. Raphael’s Catholic Cemetery in Springfield.
Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.

Iona Marie Fox Schmid Retka was born on March 14, 1914, in Comfrey, the daughter of Leo Sr. and Kathryn (May) Fox. She had lived in Wanda, Sanborn, Redwood Falls, Dawson, Princeton, Brooklyn Center, and Cold Spring. Iona worked as a dress maker, a sales clerk, a bookkeeper, and a nurses assistant. She was a member of the St. Boniface Church in Cold Spring and a former member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn, a member of the Rosary Society, and Daughters of Isabella. She loved horses and horse races. Iona enjoyed flower gardening, reading, cooking and baking, sewing, bird watching and in her younger years, enjoyed fishing, and pheasant and deer hunting.
Iona died on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at her home in Cold Spring at the age of 99 years.
She is survived by her children – Richard and his wife Jacqueline Schmid of Ramsey and Steven Schmid of Cold Spring; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; five step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; sisters – Anna Mae Norcutt of Sanborn and Eulalie Catherine Kircher of Sanborn; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 1st husband – Raymond Schmid; 2nd husband – Norbert Retka ; a son – Anthony Schmid; a grandson – Christopher; a granddaughter – Janene; and brothers – Leander, Elmo, Ephraim, Otis, Leo Jr, Leroy, and George Fox.
