  • The Redwood County Board of Commissioners opted to let the wheelage tax option roll by at its meeting Tuesday morning.
After discussing the concept earlier this year and then continuing to talk about it at its meeting this week, the board weighed the pros and cons of the concept and decided it was not a good fit for the county at this time.
The option was made possible as part of the 2013 Minnesota legislative session, as counties were presented the option as a way to raise added funds to help cover increased transportation costs.
It has until Aug. 1 to make up its mind, but the general consensus of the board was to pass on the idea.
The new law would have allowed the county to add a per vehicle tax of up to $10, and the information it received from the Transportation Alliance determined the county, with 17,400 eligible vehicles would have been able to raise up to $174,000 in revenue through the new tax.
Of course, there was an administrative fee assessed by the state of five cents per $10 for its work in collecting the funding on behalf of the county.
