  • When it comes to summer some of the focus for the editorial staff here at the Gazette changes, as we spend more of our time taking in weekend activities than we would during those colder, stay indoors times of the year.
As the weekends continue from now through the early days of the fall, we are going to be out and about as we celebrate with you. I actually like to be involved in these community celebrations and look forward to seeing many of you in places such as Seaforth and Franklin.
The challenge we face, though, is in getting to all of these events every single year.
This past weekend was a great one for the area, as communities, such as Redwood Falls, Morgan, Vesta and the Lower Sioux all celebrated.
Yet, as I was able to speak with people at a couple of these competing events they wondered if there was any way to communicate with each other to ensure community events were not taking place at the same time.
Crowds were a bit thin at times as people were forced to choose between one event and another.
I explained to them there are only so many weekends to utilize during this window of opportunity, and while I also wish we could spread these events over a longer period of the summer, I know that is not always possible.
So, if you don’t see us at your event every year know we are likely taking in another celebration someplace else.
Speaking of this past weekend, I was able to get to a few things and want to compliment those who work so hard to put these celebrations on each year.
It is not easy to coordinate activities that can keep the interest for people of all ages.
I know you hear a lot of complaints, so I wanted to express my appreciation to those of you who put in those long days.
The Krause clan enjoyed the Vesta parade this year, and on a relatively warm Sunday afternoon, they liked cooling off as they watched the firemen from area departments compete in water fights.
The kids loved it, and I tolerated their soaking wet clothing in the van.  After all, it’s about having a little bit of fun, and we all could use more of that.
I was also able to watch the Redwood Falls Women of Today community parade Friday night.
While I enjoyed all of it, I want to say I again really was impressed with the RVHS band.
I know some of the kids don’t like me very much, but I want to say those musicians sure look sharp in those uniforms.
Page 2 of 2 - I am so glad they were taken out of storage, and I hope to see them every year. For me, that band in those uniforms is what the parade is all about.
Tomorrow marks the official start of the summer, as we move from what has been a cool, wet spring into what most expect to be a warm, humid summer.
My better half hates summer, and in some ways I do concur.
The part I like best, though, is knowing there are no snowbanks in my way as I drive to work each morning. That sort of makes the heat worth it.
Enjoy the summer…and the air conditioning.
