  •     The Saints boys tennis team held its banquet last Thursday evening.
The Saints number one singles player junior Connor Olson won the team’s MVP award.
Underclassmen won the other team awards as Colin Hoppe and Cole Skow tied for the award as the Most Improved player.
For the second year Aldair Trujillo won the Jimmy Connors Hustle award and the Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award went to John Foss.
Senior plaques went to players with three or more years of varsity competition. Recipients of those plaques were Michael Hedlund, Erik Heitz, Brock Mueller and Kilian Wehde.
Saints who were named to the All Conference Tennis Team by the South Central Conference were Connor Olson, Connor Engel, John Foss, Cole Skow and Will Runge.
One of the factors that keeps the Saints tennis teams pointed in the direction of winning seasons is the Dedicated and Devoted - DAD - awards. They go to players who spend the time in the offseason doing the training and practice necessary to have a successful season the following year.
Nine Saints won DAD awards this year. They included Hedlund, Engel, Foss, Hoppe, Skow, Sandin Skow, Brandon Hjelmer, Cameron Giese and Derrick Bielke.
Winning their first letters this year were Hjelmer, Sandin Skow and Thor Henderson.
Some of the top individual performances this year went to John Foss who had the most singels wins with 12, Erik Heitz who had the most doubles wins with 15 and Heitz and Foss shared the most wins with 15.
Head Coach Les Zellmann was appreciative of the team’s efforts during the season and of the support given by the fans of SJA tennis. Talking about the cost associated with resurfacing the tennis courts last year Zellmann said. “We raised $27,000. That’s amazing and that will stay in my mind forever.”
