  • Mary “Nina” Serbus, 75, of Redwood Falls and formerly of Bechyn died Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Seasons Hospice House in Redwood Falls. Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia with Pastor Paul van de Crommert as celebrant. Burial was Wednesday at St. Mary's Cemetery in Bechyn at 2 p.m. Arrangements were with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.

    Mary “Nina” Serbus was born February 6, 1938 at Olivia to Frank and Mabel (McDowell) Lang. She graduated from Olivia High School and then worked for the phone company in Olivia.
    Nina married Richard “Dick” Serbus July 15, 1959 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. They made their home in Redwood Falls for three years and then lived and farmed near Bechyn for many years.
    Nina has resided at Garnette Gardens these past four years and recently was at Seasons Hospice House in Redwood Falls where she died Wednesday evening, May 29, 2013.
    Nina had been a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bechyn and St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. She was very active with the CCW at St. Mary’s and St. Aloysius and was also a historian for both the local and regional CCW. Nina had enjoyed quilting, sewing, card parties, music, gardening, baking, making kolaches and being with her grandchildren.
    Nina and Dick were blessed to travel to Rome, the Holy Land and numerous countries in Europe. Nina also made many trips to holy places with her dear friend Sister Juliane Kuntscher.
    Nina’s family fondly remembers how she loved raising her family, her hard work, and her seemingly incredible ability “to do it all.” Nina was baptized, married and celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary at St. Aloysius Catholic Church and her family will celebrate her funeral there also.
    Nina is survived by her husband Richard “Dick” Serbus of Bechyn; her 11 children: Jeffery (and Cindy) of Jacksonville, N.C., Karen (and Terry) Maiers of Buffalo Lake, Gloria (and Brian) Greenslit of Franklin, Brenda (and Harlan) Brue of Wakonda, S.D., Julie Serbus (and special friend Jon Sander) of Renville, Kirt (and Lori) of Olivia, Mary Jo Serbus of Eagan, Todd (and Colleen) of Redwood Falls, Kevin (and special friend Carrie) of Olivia, Galen (and Shanna) of Danube, and Laura (and Shawn) Curry of Olivia; her 39 grandchildren; her 17 great-grandchildren; and her siblings: Leona, Esther, Alice, Sam, Bob, Art, Eugene, Katherine, LeRoy and David.
    Nina was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son Chuck, her brother Harvey Lang, and her sister Lillian Bratsch.
