  • The 1970s-era Street Department shop on Mill Street is showing its age, and the Redwood Falls City Council approved plans for a $1.2 million replacement at Tuesday’s council meeting.
    The 72 x 160 foot building is to be constructed near the city water treatment plant on Highway 71 leading south out of town.
    The new facility will include vehicle storage bays, a wash bay, workshops for welding and maintenance, parts storage, and an office and breakroom.
    Bids open on constructing the pre-engineered metal structure this week, with removal of the current building set to begin on June 24, with an estimated final completion date of Dec. 20.
    In other city news, the council:
    • Approved a $560,000 reconstruction of West River Street, set to begin in mid-July.
    The project originally was going to be a bituminous overlay of the existing street, but an examination of the sewer system underneath indicated an entire street reconstruct was necessary.
    • Approved a new, standardized way of calculating how city licence fees should be charged or returned based on an applicant requesting a mid-year license, or being asked to surrender a license in mid-year.
    • Authorized the withdrawal of .32 acres of wetland credits and payment of processing fees from the city of Redwood Falls-owned wetland bank, as part of the Northwood Drive extention currently being constructed to service the U’Ren Brothers LLC development property.
    • Accepted a new Stalker DSR 2X Radar Unit for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety as a Large Incentive Award, on behalf of the Redwood Falls Police Department.
    • Approved a variance from Jerry and Jan Raddatz to reduce the side yard setback from eight feet to five feet, and the front yard setback from 25 feet to 22 feet to construct a garage addition a their property located at 402 South Lincoln Street.
    • Approved a variance for Timothy Prahl to reduce the side yard setback from eight feet to six feet to construct a garage addition at his property located at 511 North Lincoln Street.
    • Approved an exchange of memberships, punch passes, pool passes, day passed, etc. between the RACC/Recreation Dept. and Aquatic Center, and KLGR “radio auction” for advertising credits, in the amount of $1,500 to be auctioned Dec. 31, 2013.
    • Approved a 3.2 percent On-Sale Malt Liquor and Wine Licence for Bridge Street Cuisine, DBA Country Kitchen, allowing the restaurant to sell strong beer in combination with their wine license.
    • Standardized on a $75 fee for background fees for various city-licenses when required.
