  • Melvin Hammerschmidt, 86, of Lamberton, died Monday, April 29, 2013 at his home. Funeral services will be May 2 at 10 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lamberton. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will take place at a later date.

    Melvin Lawrence Hammerschmidt was born November 15, 1927 in Redwood County, the son of George and Maria (Simon) Hammerschmidt. He was confirmed March 8, 1959 at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church. Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Army February 14, 1946 and was honorably discharged August 31, 1947. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Geske June 13, 1955 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Wabasso. Melvin worked for Meadowland Farmers Co-op for 33 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lamberton and the Lamberton American Legion and enjoyed polka dancing and music, golfing, bowling, riding horse and buggy, and woodworking – making games and bowls.
    He is survived by wife Lorraine of Lamberton; sons – Randy of Lamberton, Ricky of Lamberton, Rod (Gina) of Springfield and Reed (Kristel) of Prior Lake; six grandchildren; brother Reynold (Swede) of Redwood Falls and sisters – Leah Dolezal and Elaine Rudenick.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers – Frank, George,  Joe, Marcellinus (Marcy) and Bert and sisters – Zeta Kretsch, Verna Allex, Hattie Hammerschmidt, Marie Buttenhoff and Ann Schmidt.
