Bernese Marcella Winget, the daughter of Fred and Bertha (Akre) Moritz, was born December 7, 1921 in North Redwood. She was raised in rural Delhi and received her elementary education in Delhi Public School. Bernese attended high school in Redwood Falls and graduated with the Class of 1939.
Following graduation, Bernese moved to Washington, D.C. where she was employed as a typist in the war department.
Bernese earned her private pilot’s license and was a member of the “99’s” – a women’s pilot club organized by Amelia Earhart.
On June 28, 1942, Bernese married William A. Brand, M.D. at the Methodist parsonage. The couple flew their private plane – with Bernese at the helm – to various medical conventions throughout the country. Dr. Brand passed away in 1971, and Bernese continued to live in Redwood Falls. She was later married to Francis Winget; he also preceded her in death. Bernese was a housekeeper for several families in the area and also worked at Control Data for eight years.
She is survived by nephews Roger (Carol) Mattison of Savage and Bradley Moritz of Montana and niece Barbara Mattison of Chandler, Ariz.
Bernese was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; sister Irene Mattison; brothers Herman and Floyd Moritz; nephew James Moritz; and niece Mary Jean Gilland.
Blessed be her memory.
