Broadway will get a new look next autumn with the approval of the Redwood Falls City Council.
Next September, the Minnesota Department of Transportation plans to do a mill and overlay of Trunk Highway 67 (Broadway St. in city limits).
The $790,000 project, similar to what was done to update Highway 19/71 recently, will run from where Broadway intersects with Mill St., all the way to the city of Morgan.
However, because it is a trunk highway, MNDoT is only required to pay for upgrading the two traffic lanes.
From Mill St. until Drew St., Broadway is widened to include parking lanes and gutters.
In order to include the cost of upgrading the widened lanes, MNDoT has asked the city to pay $24,770 as its share of the cost, which the city approved.
In addition to the mill and overlay, MNDoT will replace pedestrian ramps in the right of way, and replacing adjacent curb and gutters.
In other news, the council:
• Approved The Sand Trap LLC as operator of the Redwood Falls Golf Course from Jan. 2013-Dec., 2017.
The city owns some property used by the golf club, and so the club’s board needed city approval to go ahead with the new arrangement.
• Approved four zoning changes necessary before construction can begin on the proposed new Law Enforcement Center additions.
• Approved a lease termination agreement between the city and Midwest Business and Energy Resources, LLC, which was leasing office space at the Redwood Falls airport.
Owner Kevin Anderson will pay the city $5,000 to help offset city expenses in re-letting the space.
• Approved the hiring of Debb Balcer as the city and hospital’s new financial analyst.
• Approved a downtown commercial rehab loan application from Bruce Kaardal, to put a new roof on the property he owns at 236 S. Mill St.
The total cost of the proposed renovation is $16,491, of which $5,492 will come from a low interest loan, and a similar amount from a forgivable loan from the city.
• Updated and approved a new “opt-out” policy for city employees who choose to not use the City Group Health Coverage for Medicare Eligible Employees.
• Updated the city’s grievance procedure for employees, giving the city administrator final determination for all grievances. The new policy in no way changes the authority of the city council, who will still have to approve any suspensions or terminations.
• Accepted the voluntary resignation of Jack Reck as city power plant operator / mechanic as of Feb. 28.
• Approved a $6,667 payment as the city’s share of the Western Community Action Transit Bus program.
