Clarence Serbus, 93, of rural Bird Island died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the Golden LivingCenter in Franklin. Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Franklin with Pastor Jerry Berger as celebrant. Burial is in St. Patrick’s Birch Coulee Cemetery. Military rites are by Franklin and Fairfax American Legion’s. Visitation is Friday 4-8 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Franklin with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Bird Island.Clarence Frank Serbus was born September 2, 1919 in Marshall County, near Thief River Falls to Joseph J. and Lillian (Dolezal) Serbus. He attended rural schools and later attended ag school for two years. Clarence’s family had lived near Regal and later settled at Bechyn, where he assisted his family on the farm. Clarence served his country in the U.S. Army during WWll from 1945-1946 in the South Pacific Theatre including the Occupation of Japan. After his service he returned to Bechyn to continue farming. He married Martha Kodet January 14, 1947 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. They made their home and farmed at rural Bird Island and were blessed with eight children. Clarence was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Franklin where he also served as a trustee and eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, 60 plus year member of American Legion Post 308 at Franklin, a member of the VFW in Olivia, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans in Hutchinson. Clarence was also a director on Flora Mutual Insurance Board, a board member of Bird Island Creamery and Mid America Creamery in Winthrop, a member of the Bird Island Farmers Elevator and had served for 43 years as Supervisor of Norfolk Township Board. Clarence had enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, playing cards, pitching horseshoes, mowing lawn and his winter past time was cutting quilt squares. Clarence especially loved being with his grandchildren.Clarence is survived by his wife Martha Serbus of Bird Island; his eight children: Mary (Richard) Welshons of Fridley, Robert (Gail) Serbus of Belgrade, Margaret (Stan) Siegfried of Sioux Falls, S.D., Steve (Valerie) Serbus of Bird Island, Patrick (Jan) Serbus of Franklin, Victor (Connie) Serbus of Franklin, Larry (Julie) Serbus of Bird Island, Jane Serbus (and John Monson) of Bartlett, Ill.; his 24 grandchildren; his 17 great-grandchildren; his sisters Marie Serbus of Grand Rapids and Veronica Littell of Spokanne, Wash. and his brothers: George (and Beatrice) Serbus of Hector, Dick (and Nina) Serbus of Redwood Falls and Bernard Serbus of Texas. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers: Joseph Serbus and John Serbus and his two sisters: Lillian Haney and Cecelia Kodet.Blessed be his memory.
