Each Jan. 1 I sit down, like many of you do, and I put together a few things I would like to accomplish over the coming 365 days.
As I watched a bit of college football this past Tuesday afternoon, I began that list of goals I hope to achieve, and, quite honestly, the list seems to be getting longer every year.
The main reason for this is I continually fail to meet the goals I had hoped to reach in the previous year, and, so, as a result the heading on the top of the goals list changes to indicate the year change, with those goals not yet done being increased by those I hope to also get done by 11:59:59 Dec. 31, 2013.
That first day of the new year is just another day for some, while for others it symbolizes that new chance we all have to start fresh – to begin again.
While I certainly see the calendar change as a new beginning in many ways (I am going to struggle for at least the first six weeks in getting used to writing 2013 instead of 2012), but I think I am also getting a bit more cynical wondering why I need to have Jan. 1 come just to get a handle on things in my life I want to change.
Did you know the average person who makes a resolution in the new year lasts less than six weeks before they give up. This is particularly true for those who resolve to quit smoking, eat healthier or exercise more.
The lesson I think I have learned is to find goals I can manage and to break them down into more achievable goals.
For example, one of the things I hope to accomplish in 2013 is to organize all of the books I have in my collection.
Right now I have books stacked upon books, and it takes me forever to find what I am looking for. So, I decided to find a way to get them more organized.
Organizing the hundreds of books is a lofty goal, but I figure if I come up with some sort of numbering and alphabetizing system I can use to keep them better organized I just might have a chance to get the job done.
Part of the problem is the books I have also include the hundreds of books the Krause progeny have also collected, and keeping the “Junie B. Jones” books separate from the “Magic Treehouse” series is going to be a pretty significant task.
Part of the reason the books are stacked willy nilly in the Krause basement is I have completely run out of room. That means having to find or build more shelves, and those who know anything about me also recognize my construction abilities fall woefully short when it comes to projects like these.
I also know one of the issues I’m going to deal with over the next several months is the reality of my constant desire for more books. (Perhaps my goal for 2013 should have started with seeking help for my book collecting addiction.)
I also know as an avid reader when I begin sorting the books I am going to find myself flipping through books and then discovering hours have gone by when no books have been organized and 100 pages of another book have been read.
Maybe finding a solution to this problem is not going to be as easy as I first thought.
