Demand was down a bit at this year’s Share the Spirit toy and food giveaway in the National Guard Armory.
That’s good. According to organizer Laurie Dolan, 170 families received items from the group this year.
Dolan also said donations were up dramatically.
“We got over 250 toys from Wal-Mart’s ‘Fill the Truck’ drive,” said Dolan.
Dolan told of one area family she knows of that went shopping at Wal-Mart last week for gifts to give away, and ended up spending over $175.
“The mother said they threw away their budget and just kept buying. They were just having too much fun,” said Dolan.
“One mother called and said her son would like to donate $300 worth of toys,” said Dolan.
“The woman’s son is currently serving in Afghanistan. Share the Spirit helped him when he was a boy, and so he sent his mother to buy $300 worth of toys for him. She dropped them off Tuesday.
“We always have people who give back to Share the Spirit, but from Afghanistan? That goes above and beyond.”
Dolan said Share the Spirit received so many donations this year that the extras can be given to families that had to be place on the waiting list.
