Martin Schmidt, 95, of Wood Lake passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Granite Manor in Granite Falls. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in rural Wood Lake. Interment was at St. Luke’s Lutheran Cemetery. Martin Henry Schmidt was born April 12, 1917 in Posen Township, Yellow Medicine County to Philip and Amelia (Frank) Schmidt. He was baptized at St. Luke’s and confirmed his faith at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Posen Township on April 13th, 1930. He attended Mankato School of Business. He was united in marriage to Hattie Loretta Dagel on June 6, 1943 in Montevideo. Martin and Hattie farmed in Posen Township. For 26 years they spent winter months in Texas from 1977 to 2003. Martin resided at Fieldcrest Assisted Living facility in Cottonwood from May 2011 until he moved to the Granite Falls Hospital and Manor in December 2011. He was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church where he was active as an elder and on the building committee. He was on the Equity Elevator Board for over 25 years. He enjoyed playing cards, entertaining, planning fishing trips and fish fry’s in Texas and at Waskawood Resort in Glenwood. He and Hattie loved to dance as well as spend time with family and friends.
Martin Henry Schmidt died on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Granite Falls Hospital and Manor at the age of 95 years, seven months and 18 days.
He is survived by his children, Daniel Schmidt and wife Marilyn of Wood Lake, Berwyn Schmidt and wife Gayle of Howard Lake, and Nadine Rozikes and husband Steve of St. Paul and special nephew Roger Olson and wife Pat. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; Marc Schmidt and wife Gretchen, Melissa Ertsgaard and husband Rev. Todd, Michael Schmidt, Michelle Salfer and husband Robert, Matt Schmidt, Amy St. Pierre and husband Travis, Heather Rokeh and husband Jason, Douglas Schmidt and wife Bridget, Kelly Schmidt, John Kader and wife Amber, Sharon Bauer and Nicholas Rozikes, Randy Olson and wife Shannon, Shari Flakus and husband Tony, Katherine Bach and husband Doung, 20 great-grandchildren, brothers Leroy of Wood Lake, Ordean of Glenwood, Edgar of Danbury, Wisc.; Loren of Springfield, Philip of Wood Lake and sister Joanne Willhite of Woodbury and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Hattie, son Stanley, three brothers, Arnold, Art and Vernon Schmidt and sisters Hilda Preuss and Olena Jorgenson.
