When the Avera Medical Group in Marshall bought PBR Optical in Redwood Falls last year, it got some people at Avera thinking.
Maybe there was room for several other specialists to visit Redwood Falls, too.
Amber Crowley, Vice-President of Clinic Operations at the Avera Medical Group, said last week that Avera decided to buy the rest of the Bridge St. building last year.
“We used a lot of the basic structure, but tore down a few walls and did a basic facelift,” said Crowley. “With what we have done, we have four exam rooms. The space is very versatile.”
One of the exam rooms is designed for psychiatric care, while the others feature the standard medical equipment. In addition, the new facility includes a nurses station, two doctors’ stations, and a small space for storing medicines and raw blood.
Currently, three specialists are set to visit the Redwood facility — an OB/GYN, a general surgeon, and an orthopedic surgeon.
The OB/GYN has already seen patients in Redwood, while the other two are currently taking appointments.
The specialists currently visit Redwood as part of their rounds twice a month, for half a day.
The optometry clinic will stay in its current location, while the clinic occupies the ground floor of the former accountant’s office at the other end of the building.
Most of the tenants in-between have moved to different locations, or will be soon, leaving the offices in the center of the building empty for the time being.
“We would like to expand our services and include other specialties,” said Crowley, “such as podiatry and psychiatry. We’re still looking for other opportunities.”
“Avera Marshall has been steadily expanding services and technology as well as increasing the number and type of medical specialists, including gynecologists, internal medicine providers and general surgeons,” said Mary Maertens, President/CEO.
Crowley said Avera — which operates four hospitals in South Dakota and one in Marshall — only got into the clinic business four years ago.
“Since 2008, we’ve seen some very successful recruitment. When we started out clinic program we had just three specialists. Now we have 26 employed providers in all our clinics.”
