  • What do residents think about the Flexible Learning Year (FLY) program the Redwood Area School District has been involved in for the past three school years?
A chance to express those opinions is being offered to the public, as the district has scheduled three public hearings to discuss FLY.
Those meetings, which are Nov. 26 at 6 p.m., Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. and Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. are all being held in the RVMS/HS board room.
According to Rick Elling-worth, RASD superintendent,  the purpose of the hearing is to offer the public the most recent information the district has collected on everything from student achievement, professional development and survey data.
After a power point presentation is made by the district, which is going to include both local data and consortium-wide information from all 25 districts involved in FLY, the public is going to have the opportunity to share their thoughts about the proposal.
Ellingworth said whenever a school district proposes what is known as a flexible learning year schedule it must conduct public hearings to take the public’s input.
With the Redwood Area Board of Education considering whether or not to move ahead with an extension of the FLY program, it is required to host public meetings to allow the public a chance to speak.
Ellingworth said public comments made at the hearings are going to be recorded and must be included as information if the district makes an application to the Minnesota Department of Education to allow for FLY approval.
Ellingworth said the hearings are all going to be the same, which means the public only needs to attend one of the meetings. The only information which may be different would be based on public questions the board did not prepare for in advance of the hearings. For more information, contact the school district at (507) 644-3531.
